3 Steps for Major Change

1. Write your vision down

                Imagine your life three years from now. Where do you want to live? What do you want your occupation to be? Who do you want to be spending your time with? How much money do you want to be earning? The simple act of writing these things down will help you solidify your goals. Research done by psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews concluded that those who merely formulate goals but don’t write them down only accomplish 43% of those goals. Those who write them down accomplish 64%, and those who write their goals down and share them with a friend accomplish 76% of their goals.

2. Make an actionable plan

                Now that your goals are written down, it is time to come up with a plan… a real plan… a plan with actionable steps, milestones, timelines and strategies. This might seem challenging at first, but it is actually quite simple. For each goal, write down two or three major things that need to happen. Next, write down simple tasks that you can do on a bi-weekly basis to help you make consistent progress. Finally, write down two or three dates. These dates will be your checkpoints. Write down what milestones you want accomplished by these checkpoints.

3. Get social support

                Right now there isn’t much stopping you from crumpling up that piece of paper and throwing it into your fireplace (if you actually have one). Tell a couple of your friends or family members what your goals are and show them how you plan to get there. If they know the dates of your checkpoints, they can hold you accountable to your milestones. This adds an extra layer of motivation to your endeavors. Having other people know about your plans and action steps will help you not feel alone in your journey. When you share your goals with a friend, they may decide to go after their own goals as well. If that happens, there will be no stopping you!
